ActionAid is a global movement of people working together to further human rights and defeat poverty for all.
ActionAid is a non-political, non-religious organisation that has been working in Uganda since 1982 to end poverty and injustice.
ActionAid is among the leading anti-poverty agencies working directly with over one million poor and excluded people in 50 districts of Uganda.
ActionAid focuses on tackling the root causes of the injustice of poverty rather than just meeting people’s immediate needs.
The organisation is primarily concerned with defending and raising awareness of human rights, be they economic, social, cultural, civil or political.
Employing local staff in its work, the organisation supports projects and programmes that promote the interests of poor and excluded people at all levels.
Recognising that poverty cannot be fought single-handedly, ActionAid works with others in the fight to end poverty and injustice.

In Uganda, Oxfam’s focus is on supporting those affected by conflict, lobbying for peace, rights of nomadic herders, and livelihoods.
Uganda is faced with diverse challenges. In the north, recent decades have seen communities terrorized by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and destroying trade and livelihoods.
Pastoralist communities in the northeast have suffered years of neglect and an unfettered flow of arms through the porous borders with Sudan and Kenya. In the lush, mountainous southwest, climate change is posing serious threats to people’s access to water and farmland.

The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) was established under the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda. The decision to establish a permanent body to monitor the human rights situation in the country was in recognition of Uganda’s violent and turbulent history that had been characterized by arbitrary arrests, detention without trial, torture and brutal repression with impunity on the part of security organs during the pre and post independence era.
Commission’s Functions
Article 52 (1) of the Uganda Constitution lays down the following functions of the Commission:
- To investigate, at its own initiative or on a complaint made by any person or group of persons against the violation of any human right;
- To visit jails, prisons, and places of detention or related facilities with a view of assessing and inspecting conditions of the inmates and make recommendations;
- To establish a continuing programme of research, education and information to enhance respect of human rights;
- To recommend to Parliament effective measures to promote human rights including provision of compensation to victims of violations of human rights, or their families;
- To create and sustain within society the awareness of the provisions of the Constitution as the fundamental law of the people of Uganda;
- To educate and encourage the public to defend this Constitution at all times against all forms of abuse and violation;
- To formulate, implement, and oversee programmes intended to inculcate in the citizens of Uganda awareness of their civic responsibilities and an appreciation of their rights and obligations as free people;
- To monitor the Government’s compliance with international treaty and convention obligations on human rights; and
- To perform such other functions as may be provided by law.

Title: Citizens’ engagement to improving maternal health service delivery in Bujumba sub-county
Background: The project is implemented in the four parishes of Mulabana, Bwendero, Bujumba and Bunyama in Bujumba sub-county. These parishes were selected because of poor access and delivery of maternal health services in the district. KADINGO is an umbrella advocacy organization focused on empowering the community to demand for improved access and quality maternal health service delivery.
The Project: KADINGO’s Mwananchi intervention is engaged advocating for improvement and access to maternal healthcare services in Kalangala district. The project initiation involved community sensitization about the new initiative and consultations with the people to identify issues of concern to them that would be subject of discussion during the stakeholder dialogue meetings. This was followed by the identification of two Parish Health Monitors from each parish. They were trained on methods of collecting maternal health information and monitoring tools designed by KADINGO.
